Rozome is the art of Japanese Batik wax-resist, a process that employs traditional methods, materials and tools adapted to use with the ‘new’ water soluble soy wax and beeswax. This intensive-course is designed for beginners as well as the experienced and gives one a chance to see demonstrations and experiment with a variety of wax and dye applications that are unique to Japan.

The lovely, open space of Espace Fibre lends itself to exploration and discovery in a mediative manner.  Come wax poetic and colourful with us!

Learn the methods to create unusual patterns and textures on cloth, including Ro-gaki brushing, Ro-shibori wax tie-dye, Ro-rora rolling, Ro-fubuki wax sprinkling, Han stamping, and Ro-kata stenciling. More advanced students will be able to practice Sekidashi, image making, and the beautiful Hanbosen, half-resist technique.The course will introduce the special Japanese shaded dyeing technique, bokashi, which produces luminous  results on silk.

Students will work with the traditional dyes of the kimono industry. Demonstrations of all processes, samples of the instructor’s own personal work of 40 years, as well as extensive handouts to take home, are all included. Slides of historical and traditional Japanese textiles and the inspiring work from the Rozome Masters encourage our study.

Materials used & provided in the class: your own professional wax brush, stencil materials, three additional wax application tools, wax and Japanese dyes.
Valerie’s Natural dye lakes and pigments and 4 organic reduction Indigo vats will also be available for discovery. 

A supply list will be provided to those registered 30 days before workshop.

Kira is an award winning, international fiber artist with over seventy exhibitions in her pocket. As a master teacher, with a deep love of wax and dye, she delights in sharing her  knowledge and insights with both experineced professionals and beginners. She was a resident of Kyoto for 18 years where she wrote The World of Rozome : Wax-Resist Textiles of Japan.  Kiranada currently teaches Surface Design at Massachussetts College of Art and Design, Boston and recently produced a new DVD on Ro-Kata : Wax Stencil Process.   Dr. Kiranada is an ordained Buddhist who explores the connections between meditation,  creativity and art

Valérie d. Walker is transmedia fibre artist & coordinator at Espace Fibre,  an interdisciplinary art space with fibre-centric tendancies and natural dyeing workshops with an enviro-friendly dye research bend.
Digital fibres and enviro-energy are part of V’s digital fibres interests.   Her knowledge of natural dyes and indigo dyeing goes deep into her Jungian consciousness,  levened with over 20 years of indigo sensorial devotion & experience.   From seed to dye V practices holistic, enviro-loving natural colour explorations, printing with vegetable starches, shaped thread resist (shibori-zomé), mulberry paper stencil printing (kata-zomé).   In addition to her fibre & digital arts, Valérie is currently producing a limited line  of hand made, organic natural dye pigments and lakes in Montréal.   www.ValerieDWalker.com
